Scottish Tartans Resources

The purpose of this web site is to make available to the public primary source material dealing with the subject of tartan and Highland dress. Our particular focus is on the growth of the "tartan cult" during the nineteenth century, and some of the early attempts to collect and catalog records of named tartan setts.

Please check back with this site often as we continue to add free resource material.  There is no charge for access to any of the information on this web site.  If you wish to contribute to our efforts and show your appreciation, please consider making a tax deductible donation to the Scottish Tartans Museum by clicking the "Donate" button at the bottom.

This web site is an ongoing work in progress. We will be photographing and uploading the tartan information and Highland dress illustrations contained in many of the rare books in the Scottish Tartans Museum collection. The Scottish Tartans Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Scotland s Highland dress traditions, specifically tartan and the kilt. Located in Franklin, NC, we are the only museum outside of Scotland dedicated to the subject of tartan. You can learn more about our museum by visiting www.scottishtartans.org.
