He doesn't have to have a clan tartan, for what it's worth. Prior to the Victorian era, there weren't assigned clan tartans; each district had distinctive patterns that it favored, so one could tell the region from which a Highlander came by the patterns of tartan he wore, but not his clan affiliation; the clan affiliation was identified by the kind of plant he was wearing in his cap (heather, oak, etc.).
