: How do you tell which tartan to wear when there are several shown for one clan?

Yours is a very common question, and easily answered. The short answer is, you can wear any
tartan that you want. It is simply a matter of personal taste. The long answer is that the distinctions
between the tartans are often ones that we create ourselves. Usually there is one standard tartan
for a clan. In your case, the red Wallace. This is always appropriate to wear, no matter
what the situation. In cases of large clans like MacDonald or Campbell, which may have several
branches, often different tartans are used by different branches, althgouh the original clan tartan
is still the most appropriate. However there is no such distinction among clan Wallace. The priomary
tartans you have to choose from are the standart red, and the green (or hunting) wallace, and the
blue wallace. These are both variations of the red Wallace. Each of these can then be woven in the modern,
ancient, or weathered color schemse. These names have nothing to do with age or dating. They simply denote
shades of colors. Modern = dark and bold. Ancient = lighter shades. Weathered = washed out and faded.
Which one of these you wear is your own personal choice. Most Wallaces go with the red modern, although the green
is often seen as well. You may pick whichever you like. They are all Walalce tartans and all represent your
clan.
